15 January 1997
AGE-NC Project No 96-0229
P-8 were advanced downgradient of the UST and dispenser areas Soil probe boring locations are
depicted on Figure 2
3 3 SOIL. SAMPLE COLLECTION
Discrete soil samples were collected at five-foot intervals beginning at approximately 15 feet bsg
using a Geoprobe soil sampling assembly loaded with pre-cleaned 1 125-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves
Soil samples were preserved by covering both ends of brass sleeve with Teflon sheets, capping and
' sealing with tape Upon preservation, each sample sleeve was labeled with the following information
soil probe boring location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials
' The samples were logged on a chain-of-custody form, stored in a chilled container and transported
to a state-certified laboratory for analysis of total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline
(TPH-g), volatile aromatics (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylenes BTE&X), methyl tert-
' butyl ether (MTBE), and Total Lead in accordance with EPA methods 8015m, 8020 and 6010,
respectively
34 GROUND WATER SAMPLE COLLECTION
' Grab ground water samples were collected from selected soil probe borings using a Geoprobe water
sampling assembly For the sampling assembly, probe rods are fitted with a retractable ground water
screen and advanced to the total depth of each probe boring, the rods were then pulled four feet
upward, exposing the screen at total depth to allow ground water to flow into the screen
' A bailer fitting was then placed on the end of 3/8-inch diameter polyethylene tubing, inserted through
the rod assembly into the exposed screen, through which water was manually pumped Ground water
was encountered in each probing at a depth of approximately 37 feet bsg
' Upon collection, water samples were transferred into three 40-m1 EPA vials containing hydrochloric
acid as a preservative, and one 1-liter amber bottle Each sample container was labeled with the
following information location, time, date and sampler's initials Each sample was logged on a chain-
of-custody form, placed in a chilled container and transported to a state-certified laboratory for
analysis of TPH-g, BTE&X, MTBE, and total lead in accordance with EPA methods 5030/8015m,
602, and 200 9 respectively
3 5 LOGGING
During probe boring activities, sample duplicates were monitored for the presence of organic vapors
