Mr Fred Cruz,SJVAPCD May 7,2004
Source Test Report Project No U6100-16-9
ARCO Station No 6100
Page 2
During system start-up, the following parameters were monitored and recorded on field
data sheets
• System influent flow rate,
• Applied vacuum on the vapor extraction wells,
• Collection of influent and effluent air samples,
• System operating temperature, and
• Photo-ionization detector (PID) measurements for organic vapors from the
extraction wells
Influent and effluent samples were collected from both systems on March 9, 2004, in the
presence of SJVAPCD personnel Samples were collected in one-liter tedlar bags from
the sample ports (see Figure 3) using a tedlar bag vacuum chamber and an air sampling
pump Samples were forwarded to Sequoia Analytical, a state certified laboratory (ELAP
• #2374), and were analyzed for gasoline range organics (GRO) using United States
Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Method 8015B/DHS LUFT Manual, and for
benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (BTEX compounds), and methyl
tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) using USEPA Method 8021B Analytical results and chain
of custody documentation are included in Appendix A All field measurements were
recorded on field data sheets, which are included in Appendix B
Analytical results of the soil vapor samples collected on March 9, 2004, were used to
calculate mass extraction rates, mass emission rates, and destruction efficiencies for both
of the SVE systems Table 1 presents a summary of the system operating parameters,
analytical results, and destruction efficiencies Detailed calculations are presented in
Appendix C
Based on analytical results for March 9, 2004, the GRO, benzene, and MTBE mass
emission rates for SVE Unit 1 were estimated to be approximately 0 46 pounds per day
(lbs/day), 0 005 lbs/day, and 0 007 lbs/day, respectively, while that for SVE Unit 2 were
estimated to be less than 0 15 lbs/day, less than 0 002 lbs/day, and less than 0 006
lbs/day, respectively The destruction efficiency of both the SVE systems for GRO was
estimated to be greater than 99% The results of the source tests demonstrate compliance
with the conditions listed in the ATC
P Ifip 4ico fon ltRS1(]f10`REl rntclal2CO C,1(]{1 5owcc Tc-5l Report ckT
