1
Canepa's Car Wash
September 23, 1996
' Page -5-
6 0 SVE INSTRUMENTATION
' The PHS/EHD requested that the instrumentation necessary in the testing and operational phases of SVE
operation be described The system, in Its current configuration, has no testing instrumentation The
' following instrumentation is recommended to monitor the system during its operation
Instrumentation
' a Organic Vapor Analyzer (PID or FID)
b 2-inch and 4-inch, air tight, well head caps equipped with sampling valves
' c Hand operated or electric sampling pump with Tedlar bags for periodic sampling
and analyses
d Magnehelic gauges ranging from 0-0 5 inches H2O, 0-5 inches H2O, 0-10 Inches
' H2O, and 0-100 inches H2O
e Pitot tube used w/ magnehelic to get direct reading of air velocity in feet per
minute (fpm)
' f Air stream temperature gauge
7 0 SVE SYSTEM RADIUS OF INFLUENCE/PORE VOLUME EXCHANGE RATE
I The radius of influence (ROI) of the SVE system was estimated while extracting vapors from SV-1, SV-8,
and SV-9, individually The ROI is defined as the distance where 0 1 inches of H2O vacuum occurs
(Pederson and Curtis 1991 Soil Vapor Extraction Technology Reference Handbook,EPA/540/2-911003)
Vacuum measurements in inches of H2O were recorded from gages connected to surrounding SVE wells
to evaluate the ROI The measurements were collected while the blower was exerting a vacuum of
approximately 31 inches HO at each extraction well head (field notes attached) The blower was
operating at a flow rate of approximately 109 SCFM (see SVE SCFM- Emission Calculation Work Sheet,
Appendix C) Figures 9 through 11, Appendix A, illustrate the ROI estimates for SV-1, SV-8, and SV-9,
based on a capture zone limit of 0 1 inches of 14,0 vacuum
Radius of Influence for Selected SVE Wells
' a SV-1 = 50 feet
■ b S V = ZV feel,
c SV-9 = 30 feet
I
L CONDOR
