PHS/EHD has the following comments for
your consideration and response.
The work plan addendum proposed four additional soil borings advanced using a
Geoprobe to depths of 45 feet below ground surface (bgs). The former work plan
indicated that soil samples will be collected at five food intervals beginning at 15 feet
below ground surface and that a grab groundwater sample will be collected from each
boring and that selected soil samples will undergo TPH-gas, TPH-diesel, MTBE and
BTEX analysis. PHS/EHD assumes that the same methodology would be used for
implementation of the work plan addendum.
The work plan addendum also included the results of the December 19 and 20, 1996
investigation. The former work plan indicated that analysis would also include
permeability, porosity, soil moisture, percent organic content for site specific
environmental fate evaluations; however, this analysis evidently was notperformed,
since the results were not included with the addendum which reported the chemical
analytical results.
Significant soil and groundwater contamination was detected in soil and groundwater
samples which were collected for chemical analysis: up to 29 ppm TPH--diesel, 54
ppm TPH-gas, and 1 .0 ppm benzene were detected in soil samples collected from 133
and up to 23,000 ppb TPH-diesel, 140,000 ppb TPH--gas and 16,000 ppb benzene
were detected in the groundwater sample collected from B3. i
PHS/EHD disagrees with the proposed locations for the additional investigation. The
contamination evidenced in samples collected from 133 and 86 on the Little Caesar's
Pizza property (2520 Pacific Avenue) will require further investigation including
monitoring wells in the area north and west of these borings. Additional borings were
not proposed for the Little Caesar's Pizza property. The contamination evidenced in
samples collected from MW2 will require at least two monitoring wells southwest and
i
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
