./ LI
2402 Pacific Avenue
Page 2
southeast of MW2. The contamination evidenced in samples collected from MWl and
B3 will require at least two monitoring wells northwest of B3 and southwest of MW1 .
Also, the groundwater sample from B8 did not undergo analysis and no groundwater
sample was collected from B5, so the boring proposed 50 feet east of 68 may be
unnecessary. It is PHS/EHD's understanding that there was no indication of soil or
groundwater contamination from samples collected from 88; therefore, the additional
50 feet east between B8 and the proposed location for further investigation, may be
excessive. Please re-evaluate the proposed location east of 38.
PHS/EHD concurs with the proposed locations for additional investigation north of 67
and east of MW4.
As noted above, monitoring wells will be required to define the extent of the
groundwater plume rather that additional Geoprobe borings. The groundwater sample
results from the previous Geoprobe investigation did provide valuable information
regarding the extent of soil and groundwater contamination; however, given the
results obtained to date, PHS/EHD will require that a hollow stem auger drill rig be
used to install the required monitoring wells and to collect the additional soil samples
necessary to define the extent of soil contamination. Also, consideration should be
given to the installation of at least one vapor extraction well and an air sparge well, so
that feasibility analysis can be performed since active remediation will be required at
this site.
Furthermore, PHS/EHD indicated in correspondence dated November 5, 1996, that a
proposal for the installation of additional groundwater monitoring wells must be
included with the results obtained from the prior investigation.
Please submit a revised addendum incorporating PHS/EHD's comments. Once
PHS/EHD has reviewed and approved the revised addendum, you should obtain pre-
approval from the State Water Resources Control Board Clean--up Fund Unit to ensure
that the costs will be reimbursable.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (209) 468-0337.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Hea Division A0 ,
Mary Meays, Senior REHS Margaret Lagorio, REHS
Site Mitigation Unit Supervisor
MM/2402PAC.MS
cc: Elizabeth Thayer, CVRWQCB cc: Cleanup Fund Unit
cc: Peter Batt, 2376 E.
