PHS/EHD has the following
comments for your consideration.
The work plan proposed five soil borings to depths of 50 feet. Soil samples will be
collected at five foot intervals beginning at 15 feet below ground surface and a
groundwater grab sample will be collected from each boring. Selected soil samples
will undergo TPH-gas, TPH-diesel, MTBE, and BTEX analysis, as well as
permeability, porosity, soil moisture, percent organic content for site specific
environmental fate evaluations.
The soil and groundwater samples should be stored on ice and maintained at 4° C
until laboratory analysis. Also, the boreholes must be grouted through tremmie pipe,
from the bottom of the borehole to ground surface.
The location of the proposed soil borings were predominantly in the areas initially
determined to be downgradient of the former tank pit. Prior to initiating the proposed
field work, PHS/EHD requests that you obtain groundwater depths and determine the
gradient direction.
The work plan indicated that a van-mounted geoprobe unit would be used to collect
the soil and groundwater samples. This type of sampling equipment typically is most
cost effective for shallower borings. PHS/EHD suggests that you obtain pre-approval
from the State Water Resources Control Board Clean-up Fund Unit to ensure that the
costs will be reimbursable.
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Sen-ius
