26 October 2000
AGE-NC Project No 95-0128
3 1 PERMITTING AND PRE-FIELD WORK ACTIVITIES
Applicable site assessment permits will be obtained from the PHS-EHD In addition, an update to
the health and safety plan presently on-file will be prepared in accordance with Occupational Safety
and Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activitiev (National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U S Coast Guard and U S Environmental
Protection Agency, 1985) Prior to mobilization, the ground water extraction well location will be
clearly marked and a utility clearance obtained through Underground Service Alert
32 DRILLING, SOIL SAMPLING AND WELL COMPLETION
AGE proposes to install nine ground water monitoring wells as depicted in Figure 2 for the offsite
assessment and monitoring of dissolved MTBE, and one six-inch diameter ground water extraction
well to support interim remediation activities of the ground water at the site The proposed ground
water extraction well will be placed in the area of highest known ground water MTBE contamination
at the site Based on the MTBE-impact ground water on the shallow ground water monitoring wells
. on the site, AGE proposes a six-inch diameter ground water extraction well to be located 10 feet
west of ground water monitoring well MW-5 (See Figure 2) The extraction well will be screened
from 20 to 40 feet bsg to address highly permeable zone from 25 to 40 feet bsg and the most
Impacted ground water
Following installation, the extraction well will be developed to maximize water flow into the well
and minimize the amount of fine-grained sediment drawn into the well during pumping or bailing
Procedures for well installation and development are presented in Sections 4 2 and 4 3, respectively
The soil borings to be completed as ground water monitoring wells will be advanced utilizing a
truck-mounted, hollow-stem drill rig equipped with 8 25-inch hollow-stem augers The soil boring
on the site to be completed as the ground water extraction well will be advanced with 15-inch
hollow-stem augers
Soil samples will be collected from within the 8 25-inch hollow-stem augers at depths of 25, 30, 35,
40 and 45 feet using a California split-spoon sampler and brass sleeves The sampler will be driven
by dropping a 140-pound weight from a height of 30 Inches The number of blows required to drive
each 6-mch length of the sampler (blow counts) are to be recorded on boring logs compiled by an
AGE staff geologist
Upon sample ietrieral, the leading brass sleeve will be removed from the sampler The ends of the
sleeve will be immediately coveted with Teflon sheets and sealed with plastic end caps secured with
tape The preserved samples will then be immediately placed under Ice in a chilled container for
Advanced Geot nvironmental,Inc
