26 October 2000
AGE-NC Project No 95-0128
3 8 TREATMENT SYSTEM
AGE proposes the use of a closed-loop, three-chamber, air stripper and a 2,000-pound granular
activated carbon (GAC) absorption vessels to treat extracted ground water
Prior to processing, one 750-gallon poly tank will be used to temporarily store extracted water This
tank is equipped with upper and lower level control switches that serve to control the rate at which
extracted water is introduced into the closed-loop air stripper, to provide safety shutoff capabilities,
and to allow coarse sediment to settle out prior to treatment The process pump is located after the
holding tank
The closed-loop air stripper circulates water through a series of aeration chambers Diffusers within
each chamber release air bubbles providing an air-to-water interface that facilitates mass transfer and
contaminant removal A 55-gallon GAC vapor drum is located on the exhaust for the aeration
chambers The second stage of treatment media is contained in a 2,000-pound GAC absorption
vessels The GAG vessel is designed to adsorb TPH-g, TPH-d and BTEX compounds and to adsorb
MTBE Sample ports are located between the tank, air-stripper and vessel to allow raw water
• sampling, detection of potential process break through, and to obtain final discharge samples
39 REMEDIATION SYSTEM START-UP PERIOD
Prior to the pump and treat start up period, treated water will be pumped into a holding tank and
composite grab ground water samples collected for treatment verification
During the pump and treat start-up period(first two weeks of operation), ground water influent and
effluent of the treatment system, depth to ground water measurements and operational parameters
(ground water flow meters, fluid level sensors, total flow indicators) will be monitored daily during
the start-up period to ensure optimal removal of dissolved hydrocarbons
3 10 MONITORING AND MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES
Ground water and exhaust vapor samples from the pump and treat system influent, effluent and
intermediate stages will be collected on a weekly basis for the first month and monthly thereafter and
submitted to a State of California Department of Health Services (DHS)-certified laboratory for
analysis of the following constituents
a Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline and diesel (TPH-g and TPH-d) in
accordance with EPA Method 8015m,
Advanced GcoEnvironmentA,Inc
