ARCADIS Phase II Field
Investigation Work Plan
Groundwater data collected during the last five years indicate that a dissolved-phase Union Pacific Railroad
TEPH plume is present in the A-Zone, extending from the vicinity of the former TPCA Company
Former Maintenance Facility
pond excavation northeast approximately 850 feet. In March 2008,TEPH was not Tracy, California
detected in wells MW-01 A, MW-04A, MW-05A, MW-13A, MW-12A, and MW-15A,
defining the perimeter of the plume(see Figure 4),except to the east and southeast.
Between these perimeter wells and the source area,there are few wells; additional
wells in these transition zones(upgradient and downgradient)are necessary to
complete the monitoring network.
1.3 Investigation Objectives
The objectives of the Phase II Investigation are to complete the LPH delineation that
was begun in June 2008 and to complete additional characterization of groundwater in
areas of the plume where data are sparse(i.e., in the transition zones).The following
objectives have been identified:
• Delineate the extent of LPH to the east and west of the source area and in the
vicinity of the track pan (see Figure 3);
• Assess potential LPH sources associated with the suspected underground piping
in the vicinity of the track pan area and the Engine House;
• Assess potential impacts to groundwater from the former Toxic Pits Cleanup Act
(TPCA)pond excavation;
• Refine the delineation of the perimeter of the total extractable petroleum
hydrocarbon (TEPH)plume, particularly along the upgradient edge; and
• Assess TEPH distribution in the transition area groundwater between the source
area and the perimeter of the plume.
The Phase II investigation will include implementation of the following field activities:
• Collecting lithologic data and screening unsaturated and saturated soil for LPH
using CPT integrated with an LIF system;
• Collecting lithologic data and groundwater samples using CPT/HydroPunchTM
technology;and
C.Dnts and SenngsUdaandt Local Se ingsJemporary Internet F,leslContenLCutlooK52SXLSSI`Ph 11 WP 0105_09(2).doc 2/6
