Page 2
Soil Sampling
Verification soil samples were collected from the excavation
bottom and sidewalls at various depths below grade to
evaluate the remediation effectiveness . Soil samples were
collected from the excavator bucket by removing the top few
inches of soil and pushing a clean, six-inch-long (two
inches in diameter) brass sample tube into the soil until
completely full . The ends of the tubes were covered with
teflon tape and/or aluminum foil and sealed with plastic end
caps . The samples were then labeled, placed in a cooler with
ice, entered on a Chain-of-Custody form and given to an on-
site mobile laboratory or transported either to GTEL
Environmental Laboratory located in Concord, California or
Superior Precision Analytical, located in Martinez,
California. All laboratories used are State-certified.
Stockpile samples were collected by removing the top 16 to
18 inches of soil, then pushing a clean sample tube into the
soil until completely full . The samples were then sealed,
labeled and handled as described above .
Excavated soils suspected to be hydrocarbon impacted were
segregated and sampled seperately. Excavated soils suspected
to not be hydrocarbon impacted were discretely sampled
approximately every 20 cubic yards for confirmation analysis
before reusing as backfill material . Soils suspected to be
impacted were sampled for disposal as required by Forward
Landfill . For these purposes, one soil stockpile sample was
collected for approximately every 25 cubic yards . Four
samples were then composited into one at the laboratory for
a representative analysis of approximately every 100 cubic
yards . Thirty six samples designated with an SP pre-fix
represent soil samples collected from the stockpiled
materials ( SP-6 through SP-38a-d) . SP-6 through SP-11 and
SP-14 through SP-26 were discrete samples representing soils
segregated for on-site reuse as backfill . SP-12a-d, SP13a-d
and SP-27a-d through SP-38a-d represent soils characterized
for off--site disposal . Note that sample SP-27a-d was to be
composited by the laboratory, but by mistake was run as four
discrete samples designated as SP--27a, SP-27b, SP-27c and
SP-27d.
Soil samples collected from the former fuel (UST) complex
excavation and associated stockpiles were analyzed for Total
Petroleum Hydrocarbons calculated as Gasoline (TPH-Gasoline)
according to EPA Method 8015 (Modified) and Benzene,
Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylenes (BTEX) according to EPA
Method 8020 . Soil samples collected from the former product
piping and pump island areas were also analyzed for TPH-gas
and BTEX constituents . Verification samples collected from
