The pian
was approved by the SJLHD on November 3, 1988; (refer to Exhibit
"B". ) As noted below, the tank size was 1 ,000 gallons, not 500, as
originally reported.
On November 4, 19BB, Thorpe Oil personel uncovered and removed a
1 ,000 gallon gasoline storage tank. The tank was in poor condition
and eroded. Some discoloration of the soil was observed, and a
strong petroleum odor was noted when the tank was removed_ Soil
samples were taken from each and of the tank, 2 feet under the tank
cradle, and one sample was taken along the line leading to the
location of the pump island. Samples were taken from the backhoe
bucket by Canonole Laboratory personel , collected in sterilized
brass tubes, and transported to Canonie Laboratories under Chain of
Custody; (refer to Exhibit "C". ) Samples were to be analyzed for
BTX&E,, TVPH, EDB, and total lead, as required by the SJLHD.
Approximately 46 cubic yards of spoil was removed in an attempt to
determine the extent of contamination. Lack of suitable equipment
prevented further work at that time. The excavation was
approximately 12'wide X 12 ' long X 12' deep. The total amount of
spoil, removed at that time was approximately 59 cubic yards, which
was placed on plastic as indicated on Exhibit "D" , and properly
covered. All or portions of this operation were witnessed by a
representative of the SJLHD.
2
