1 <br /> PART 3: EXECUTION r <br /> 2 <br /> 3 3.01 SURFACE PREPARATION <br /> 4 <br /> 5 Concrete areas to be in contact with mortar or grout shall be cleaned of all loose or foreign <br /> 6 material that would in any way prevent bond between the mortar or grout and the concrete <br /> 7 surfaces. The surfaces shall be flushed with water and allowed to dry to a surface dry , <br /> a condition immediately prior to placing the mortar or grout. <br /> 9 <br /> 10 3.02 MORTAR ' <br /> n <br /> 12 A. Mortar shall be machine mixed in an approved type of mixer in which the quantity of water <br /> 13 can be accurately and uniformly controlled. The mixing time shall not be less than 5 r <br /> 14 minutes, approximately 2 minutes of which shall be for mixing the dry materials and not less <br /> 15 than 3 minutes for mixing the mortar after the water has been added. When hydrated lime <br /> 16 is used for mortar requiring a lime content, either the dry-mix method or first converting the <br /> 17 hydrated lime into a putty may be used. Where the dry-mix method is employed, the ' <br /> 19 materials for each batch shall be well turned over together until the even color of the mixed, <br /> 19 dry materials indicates that the cementitious material has been thoroughly distributed <br /> 20 throughout the mass, after which the water shall be gradually added until a thoroughly , <br /> 21 mixed mortar of the required plasticity is obtained. <br /> 22 <br /> 23 B. Mortar boxes shall be cleaned out at the end of each day's work, and all tools shall be kept <br /> 24 clean. Mortar that has begun to set shall not be used. , <br /> 25 <br /> 26 3.03 GROUT <br /> 27 <br /> 26 A. Grout may be placed in the reinforced hollow concrete block wall after the units have been <br /> 29 set for at least 24 hours. <br /> 30 <br /> 31 B. Grout shall be placed by grout pump, concrete hopper or bucket. , <br /> 32 <br /> 33 C. Grout spaces shall not be wet prior to pouring grout. <br /> 34 ,35 D. Unless otherwise indicated the grout shall have a 9 inch to 11 inch slump. <br /> 36 <br /> 37 3.04 PLACEMENT ' <br /> 36 <br /> 39 A. Mortar and grout shall completely fill and shall be tightly packed into recesses and holes, <br /> 40 on surfaces, and under structural members. <br /> 41 ,az B.
