1 SECTION 01656 <br /> 3 DISINFECTION OF WATER LINES <br /> 4 <br /> 5 <br /> i 6 PART 1: GENERAL <br /> 7 <br /> 6 1.01 DESCRIPTION: <br /> 9 <br /> 10 The work of this section consists of the disinfection of all portions of the potable water <br /> 11 system, including valves and stops and any portion of the existing connecting system that <br /> 12 might have become contaminated during construction activities. <br /> 1 13 <br /> 14 1.02 SUBMITTALS <br /> 15 <br /> 16 Submit plan for disposal of chlorinated water. <br /> 17 <br /> 16 <br /> 19 PART 2: MATERIALS <br /> ' 20 <br /> 21 2.01 CALCIUM HYPOCHLORITE <br /> 22 <br /> ' 23 HTH, by Olin Chemicals, Olin Corporation, 120 Long Ridge Road, Stamford, CN 06904, or <br /> 24 similar commercial product having approximately 70 percent available chlorine. <br /> 25 <br /> 26 2.02 MIXTURE <br /> 27 <br /> 26 A 5-percent solution shall be made by mixing 5 percent of powder with 95 percent water, <br /> 29 by weight, first into a paste, then thinning to slurry by the addition of water. <br /> 30 <br /> 31 <br /> 32 PART 3: EXECUTION <br /> 33 <br /> 34 3.01 DOSAGE <br /> 35 <br /> 36 Place enough disinfecting material in the system to insure a chlorine dosage of 50 parts <br /> 37 per million. This is equivalent to 10 ounces of commercial hypochlorite powder to each <br /> 36 1,000 gallons of water. <br /> 39 <br /> 40 3.02 FILLING SYSTEM <br /> 41 <br /> 42 Fill entire system with the chlorine solution. Open all taps and valves and leave open until <br /> 43 a strong odor of chlorine is noticeable in the water coming from the outlets, after which <br /> 44 close the taps and valves. <br /> 45 <br /> ' 46 3.03 TEST PERIOD <br /> 47 <br /> 4e Allow chlorinated water to remain in the system a minimum of 24 hours, then thoroughly <br /> 49 flush the system.
