r
r
DISCUSSION AND ANALYSIS OF FIELD & LABORATORY WORK PERFORMED:
Estimate of lateral extent of soil contamination:
As a result of the work performed at this site, the extent of
soil contamination appears to have been well defined. Plate VIII
is a plan view of the property which lists the laboratory results
' of the sail sampling during the three stages of investigative
work. The estimated maximum limit of soil contamination is
indicated by the dashed line. It appears that the contamination
is below a depth of between 4 to b feet, and is primarily
' restricted to a very plastic bluish-grey clay of limited extent.
Cross-sects ons A-B and C--D, (Plate XI , ) indicate the
configuration of the soils encountered during the work. Although
laboratory analysis of soil samples from some of the work done on
November b were below detection limits, petroleum odors and
visable staining .were noted in some of the spoil removed. This
suggests that the contamination is not uniform, and the samples
' that were collected missed those areas.
Estimate of lateral extent of water contamination:
Plate IX shows the estimated lateral limits of water
contamination based on laboratory analysis and field
' observations. Although contamination was only detected in two
borings, (Auger Holes A-3 & B, ) it is assumed that may be present
in areas where soils are impacted. An approximate "zero" line is
indicated on the map, which generally mirrors that for soil . The
' vertical extent of contamination has not been determined, but
is most likely restricted to the uppermost few feet.
' Estimate of water level & gradients
As a result of the investigative work, groundwater was noted in
' several of the auger holes. Although measurements are inexact,
an attempt was made to estimate the depth and configuration of
the water table. The result of that estimate is shown on Plate
X, which show that the shape of the plume closely matches the
' estimated top of the water. This adds further credence to the
conclusion that both the vertical and horizontal extent of the
contamination has been adequately delineated.
' CONCLUSIONS:
' Based on the analysis of the investigative work done at this
site, it is believed that the vertical and lateral extent of both
sail and groundwater contamination have been determined, and that
1
1
1
