Two ground water probes, G10 and G11, and four additional wells are proposed to further
identify the extent of ground water contamination. I recommend that probes be used to-
identify the optimum locations of the additional monitoring wells. 'If feasible, the probes also
should be left in place for some time to allow evaluation of the ground water flow directions,
gradient, and contaminant plume.
2. As I stated in my 28 September 1993 letter, visual classification of soils is appropriate for
coarse materials, but particles equivalent to or smaller than fine sand should be analyzed
using the laser particle distribution method. Since fine materials hold up the contaminants
and largely dictate-the permeability of the subsurface,environment,,obtaining:an accurate
characterization and location of these fines is essential to defining the extent of contamination
and subsequently to remediating the site.
3. The remedial action plan considers treatment and disposal of the extracted ground water via
the facility's domestic wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The Board staff member
responsible for the WWTP is Mr. Isaac Kaing. Plans to revise the WWTP's waste discharge
requirements are underway. Please contact Mr. Kaing at (916) 255-3022 during your {
evaluation of the W VIP's viability as a treatment and disposal option for extracted ground
water.
