' Emergency Remediation- 2480 Tracy Blvd., Tracy, CA. • Page 4
Following sample recovery, each sample tube was cleaned externally, its ends covered
with aluminum foil and closed with tightly-fitting plastic caps. The caps were secured with
adhesiveless tape. Each sample tube was then labeled for identification, entered into chain-
of-custody control, and packed on chemical ice for transport to Chromalab Inc.'s
laboratory in Pleasanton, California for analysis.
Each soil sample submitted to the laboratory was analyzed for the following suite of
analytes.
Analyte Method of Analysis
Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons EPA Method 5030/8015
(as Gasoline)
Benzene EPA Method 8020
Toluene EPA Method 8020
Ethyl Benzene EPA Method 8020
Total Xylene Isomers EPA Method 8020
Methyltributilethylene EPA Method 8020
Chromalab's laboratory is licensed by the California Environmental Protection Agency,
Department of Health Services (DHS)to perform the cited analyses.
Benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene isomers are commonly referred to as the
BTEX compounds. Methyltributilethylene (MTBE) is an oxygenator that reduces noxious
vehicle emissions. It has been required to be included as an additive to gasoline sold in
California since the winter season of 1992.
A sampling port, installed in the riser from the existing basement-dewatering pump, was
used to recover a sample of groundwater by opening the port and directing the port tubing
into a pair of clean, laboratory-supplied sample vials so that the vials were completely
' filled and no head space was present after the vials were tightly closed. The vials were
then labeled for identification, entered into chain-of-custody control, and shipped to
Chromalab's laboratory in the same cooler used to transport the two soil samples. This
' first sample of groundwater was designated WATER 1. At the laboratory, the
groundwater sample was analyzed for the same suite of analytes as are listed above for the
soil samples.
The recovery and preparation of the soil and groundwater samples described above was
performed in the presence of Ms. Linda Turkatte, the representative of the SJCPHS.
