Vegetation
Quarry Area
Development of the quarry area will result in the removal of approximately 55
acres of walnut orchard and asparagus crops, and the temporary loss (10 years) of this
area to further agricultural production. The wildlife habitat value in this area is
minimal. These impacts are considered temporary and less than significant.
Quarry excavation could also result in the loss of native trees (oak dominated
overstory) along the base of the bluff at the south and east edges of the quarry area,
adjacent to the town of Clements. Additionally, some isolated native trees and disturbed
scrub vegetation could be lost due to these activities. This vegetation is within an area
of existing disturbance from agricultural activity and has some value to wildlife. These
impacts are considered potentially significant. However, because the valley oak is a
species of concern, any loss of valley oak trees would be considered a significant impact.
Access Road and Bridpe Crossing,
Construction of the access road and relocation of the bridge would result in a
direct impact on the vegetation along the riparian corridor. Approximately 25 mature,
native trees along with other riparian vegetation would be removed, depending on the
exact placement of the bridge. Areas of impact, by plant association would be as
follows:
Ruderal Herbaceous Vegetation 0.02 acres
- Riparian Vegetation 0.11 acres
Freshwater Marsh 0.01 acres
Impact to riparian areas along the River corridor is considered significant.
Impacts to the ruderal herbaceous vegetation and the freshwater marsh are considered
potentially significant.
In addition to the plant assemblages mentioned above, construction of the access
road and relocation of the bridge could impact sensitive plant species. These include the
valley oak and the delta button celery. Valley oak (species of concern) is present in the
53
