;1$ RRA DELT -SIERRA GROUPIE
MOTHER LODE CHAP ET R eCL

SIERRA CLUB °
P.O. Box 9258
Stockton, CA 95208
Mar . 1 , 1990
.v
Richard Larrouy
San Joaquin County Planning Division
1810 East Hazelton Ave .
Stockton, CA 95205
Dear Mr . Larrouy :'
This letter is regarding the Notice of Preparation for
Environmental Impact Report number ER-90-8, a proposed quarry
excavation project . The Delta-Sierra Group of the Sierra Club is
concerned about the potential loss of riparian and aquatic
h;jbitat along the Mokelumne River as a result of this project .
The applicant states that natural vegetation along the river will
be protected, as no excavation will occur in areas immediately
adjacent to the river . But project activities could
significantly impact the riparian vegetation and associated
wildlife even if vegetation "immediately adjacent" to the river
is not removed . This aspect should be considered in the
Environmental Impact Report . The Initial Study notes the
potential for siltation of the river and riverbank erosion during
periods of heavy precipitation as a result of this project . As
the Mokelumne River, is important for Chinook salmon and steelhead
trout, this potential loss or degradation of fish habitat should
be thoroughly addressed in the Environmental Impact Report .
Thank you for the opportunity to comment at this preparation
phase of the Environmental Impact Report . We wish to remain on
the mailing list for the draft Environmental Impact Report and
any other documents concerning this project .
Sincerely,
Kathy Hieb
Conservation Co-Chair
Delta-Sierra Group
