INC
WZI investigated the area using three exploratory trenches that were excavated to a
depth of 7 feet (Exhibit 14) These trenches were inspected and sampled using a
composite sample from soil obtained over the length of each trench bottom Field
screening methods' did not indicate the presence of hydrocarbon impacted soil
(Appendix V)
Samples were submitted to the analytical laboratory to be analyzed using U S
Environmental Protection Agency Test Methods 8020, 8015 (modified), and 4181
Analytical results from all samples obtained from each trench were reported as being
below detection limits for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene
Results from samples submitted to the analytical laboratory indicated non-detection levels
for BTEX, Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon as Diesel, and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon for
samples obtained from trench A2-T1 Samples from trench A2-T2 and A2-T3 were
reported as non-detect for U S Environmental Protection Agency Test Method 8020 and
• 36 and 107 ppm respectively for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons using test method
8015(M)
Exploratory trenches A2-T1, A2-T2, A2-T3 reported Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons at
concentrations of 13, 65, and 29 ppm respectively using U S Environmental Protection
Agency Test Method 418 1 from composite samples collected from the bottom of each
trench A review of the chromatograph provided by the analytical laboratory indicated
that a significant portion of the reported hydrocarbons were from very heavy hydrocarbon
species The analytical laboratory did a reanalysis of the samples by grain-size
separation and determined that each of the samples hydrocarbon content was more
similar to that of asphaltine or bitumen, a common paving material (Appendix IV)
Reported concentrations for the three samples using the heavy hydrocarbon separation
were below detection limits
i
12270010 013 Page 22
