Sharpe -2- 19 September 1984
The State ( SEB , TSCD , and the Board) believes that
Sharpe is the probable source of 1 , 2-Dichloroethane in
the Cembrano well because:
1 . 1 , 2-Dichloroethane is both a possible breakdown
product of 1 , 1 , 1-Trichloroethane and a possible
contaminant in stock grades of Trichloroethylene
and Tetrachloroethylene, all of which have been
found in the shallow monitoring wells in the
North Balloon area of the Depot; and
2 . Previous ground water gradient data has shown
that flow from the North end of the Depot to the
Cembrano well is possible .
B. Contamination in Other off-Post Domestic Wells
Sharpe stated that they do not believe pollution in
the other off-post domestic wells is attributable to
them. Mr. Welsh said that other sources of chlorinated
volatile organics may exist between the Depot and
these wells , such as individuals dumping solvents in
their backyards and polluting their own wells.
Mr. Reents stated that while investigating the
Cembrano residence he and Mr . Friedrich had also
conducted a survey of the area surrounding the Depot.
No feasible sources of volatile organic contamination
were identified and only agricultural fields exist
between the Depot and the affected wells. The State
believes that the existing data shows the Depot to be
the probable source of contamination.
Mr. Welsh recommended, and the State agreed, to wait
until the results of the on-going confirmation
sampling presently being conducted by Weston Labor-
atory are available before making any further assess-
ments. The sampling by Weston was to be completed by
10 September but Sharpe informed the State at the
meeting that sampling had just begun on 12 September.
Results will not be available until approximately the
first week in October.
