-3-
complete installation of a mitigation system by the middle of
next year .
The occurrence of oil in and around the Alden park area is dis-
cussed briefly below. Please refer to the site assessment report
for more detail (Reference 1) . Recommended mitigation is dis-
cussed as well as justifications for the recommendation.
Detailed Plans
Liquid Oil
Below Surface
As indicated in the site assessment report (Reference 1 ) , liquid
oil is trapped above the water table in locations under and
around the perimeter of Alden Park . Although testing showed the
oil is not hazardous, it may pose a problem to deep rooted trees
and become a nuisance by flowing into deep excavations made in
yards.
We expect to use one of these two technologies , or both in combi-
nation, to remove the nuisance of liquid oil :
1 . The first method involves pumping groundwater and oil to the
surface, then separating the oil and water to recover the oil ,
and finally sending the water to treatment.
2 . A second method involves stimulating microorganisms that
naturally occur in the shallow soil to biodegrade the oil trapped
in the deeper soil above the water table.
To determine the effectiveness of both of these technologies , we
will perform pilot tests at Alden Park . Data from these tests
and our interpretation of the applicability of these technologies
to Alden Park will be made available to the Public Agencies in
early 1988 .
Liquids Pumping
Groundwater pumping has been successful at other sites in remov-
ing liquid oil floating on the water table. Figure 1 shows a
cross-sectional view of a groundwater pumping system and how it
draws the water surface down into a cone shape. This cone fills
with oil which is pumped to the surface for recovery.
