Project No.4-419-0381
August 29,2019
Page No.23
• All field personnel involved in excavation and pipe laying activities are instructed to wash their
hands, face, neck and forearms at the end of the workday. The excavation subcontractor will
provide soap,water and towels at the work site for this purpose;
• All field personnel are instructed to take a full body shower at home at the end of the workday;
particular attention should be paid to areas of the body that are typically overlooked,such as behind
the ears or between the toes;
• No eating,drinking or smoking will be permitted in the work zone;
• Tyvek suits, disposable ear plugs, and respirator cartridges will be discarded in garbage bags and
then disposed of in appropriate trash bins after each day of use; and
• Other personal protective equipment(see Table 1)will be washed in warm or hot soapy water after
each day of use.
3.6 Equipment Decontamination
Equipment such as shovels, digging bars, and post-hole digging equipment that have contacted
contaminants will be decontaminated before removed from the work zone. Decontamination will be with
warm soapy water, steam, and organic solvents,if necessary. Decontamination water will be containerized
and disposed of at an appropriate disposal facility.
4.0 DRILLING OPERATIONS
A drill rig is a very complex piece of heavy equipment,if not properly operated,can cause severe accidents
and injuries. This chapter covers all SALEM employees working on or around excavation equipment.
4.1 House Keeping
To complete the first requirement for safe field operations, the Project Manager/Site Safety Officer must
understand and fulfill their responsibility with regard to maintenance and housekeeping on and around the
drill rig. Suitable storage should be provided for all tools,materials,and supplies.The location should allow
for convenient handling of tools, materials, or supplies in the attempt to minimize injuries from falling
equipment. Planning the location of the hole, storage area, access,and waste provisions will go a long way
toward making housekeeping easier.The following housekeeping activities should be observed at all times
when working on or near excavating equipment.
• Avoid storing or transporting tools, materials, or supplies within or on the trucks or excavating
equipment.
• Work areas, platforms, walkways, scaffolding, and other access ways should be kept free of
materials, obstructions, and substances such as ice, excess grease, or oil that could cause a surface
to become slick or otherwise hazardous. Keep all controls, control linkages, and warning and
operational lights and lenses free of oil, grease and/or ice.
• Do not store gasoline in any portable containers other than an approved,non-sparking,red container
with flame arrestor in the fill spout. The word"gasoline"must be clearly visible on the container,
labeled appropriately, and caps must be closed tightly. Approved containers exhibit the Factory
Mutual or Underwriter's Laboratory logo.
4.2 Maintenance Activities
Maintenance activities are very important to keep excavating equipment operating in a safe manner. The
following maintenance safety guidelines shall be followed when SALEM employees are overseeing drilling
activities.
SALEM
engineering group. inc.
