Project No.4-419-0381
August 29,2019
Page No.24
• Wear safety glasses when performing maintenance activities on excavating equipment.
• Shut down the engine to make repairs, adjustments, or to lubricate fittings (except repairs or
adjustments that can only be made with the engine running).Take precautions to prevent accidental
starting of the engine during maintenance by removing or tagging the ignition key.
• Always block the wheels or lower leveling jacks,or both, and set hand brakes before working under
a vehicle.
• Whenever possible and appropriate release all pressure on the hydraulic systems, drilling fluid
system, and air pressure system prior to performing maintenance.
• Do not touch the engine or the exhaust system of an engine following operation until they have had
adequate time to cool.
• Do not use gasoline, volatile or flammable liquids as a cleaning agent on or around the vehicles.
• Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for applying the proper quantities and quality of
lubricants,hydraulic oils and/or coolants.
• Replace all caps, filter plugs, protective guards or panels, high pressure hose clamps, and chains or
cables that have been removed for maintenance before returning the vehicle to service.
4.3 Off Road Movement of equipment
The following safety guidelines should be followed when traveling off road:
• Before moving a vehicle, first walk the route of travel, inspecting for depressions, pipes, ditches,
ruts, and similar obstacles.
• Always check the brakes of the vehicle before traveling, particularly on rough, uneven, or hilly
ground.
• Discharge all passengers before moving the vehicle on rough or hilly terrain.
• Engage the front axle of 4x4 or 6x6 vehicles or carriers when traveling off the highway on an
uneven terrain.
• When an equipment operator must operate in tight quarters or amongst other onsite equipment,
adequate personnel should be provided to assist in guiding the operator's movement.
• Use caution when traveling on hillsides. Conservatively evaluate the hillside capabilities of the
vehicle. When possible maneuver around hills or travel directly uphill or downhill.
• Attempt to cross obstacles such as small pipes, erosion channels or ditches squarely, not at an angle
4.4 Overhead and Underground Utilities
The use of the excavation equipment on a site within the vicinity of electrical power lines and other utilities
requires that special precautions be taken.Pre-planning and allowing adequate amount of time in the project
schedule for obtaining utility clearances can prevent the temptation to start work in an area not properly
cleared or de-energized.
Underground utilities are as dangerous as overhead lines. Be aware and always suspect the existence of
underground utilities such as electrical power, gas, petroleum, telephone, sewer, and water lines. The
vehicle operator/project manager must have a utility location service or client representative survey the
excavation location before excavation activities commence; excavation can commence only when the team
has received clearance for the area.
Note that operating heavy equipment around high pressure gas lines often requires drug screening in order
to comply with Federal Regulations.
The following safe work practices shall be followed:
SALEM
engineering group. inc.
