A standard Caltrans encroachment permit from District 10 is required for this investigation, and
will be obtained prior to any fieldwork. Underground Service Alert will be notified of the
subsurface investigation at least 48 hours prior to initiation of the investigation.
Prior to the initiation of fieldwork, a site Health and Safety Plan will be prepared in accordance
with 29 CFR 1910.120. The health and safety plan will include safety procedures for work to be
performed at the site, chemical hazard information, site safety officers, and preferred medical
emergency locations.
In the case of high traffic volume and/or narrow shoulder widths, traffic control will be
necessary. The IT site safety officer and IT project will coordinate the traffic control with the
Caltrans TO (task order) manager.
4.2 Task 2: Field Investigation
This task will include the advancement of approximately 60 soil borings for collection of soil
samples along aforementioned locations along State Route 120 and Austin Road. Boring
locations were selected by Caltrans to provide data for systematic random evaluation of
subsurface conditions. . IT will provide traffic control, which will consist of shoulder closure
and an arrow board to alert traffic of the work. The work will be conducted within the shoulders
of SR 120 and Austin Road. A geophysical survey and advancement of borings for groundwater
samples collection will occur on the northeast, northwest and southwest corners of the SR 120
and Austin Road intersection.
The boring locations will be established using a global positioning system (GPS) with sub-meter
horizontal precision. The vertical precision is reported to be 2 to 5 times that of the horizontal
precision. The locations will be reported using latitude and longitude. The positions of each
borehole location will be presented to Caltrans in GIS database format per the task order.
The soil and groundwater samples will be stored on ice in an insulated chest and will be
transported under a chain-of-custody manifest to a California-certified analytical laboratory. All
drilling equipment will be washed prior to drilling. In addition, to minimize cross-contamination
between borings, all appropriate downhole drilling and sampling equipment will be washed
between borings. The lead study borings will be backfilled with the soil cuttings. The borings
advanced for groundwater sample collection will be backfilled with a bentonite-cement grout and
the soil cuttings placed into drums for storage at the site. Liquid wastes are not expected to be
IT Corporation 2 120Auslia_wkp
