Health and Safety Plan for
Delineation and Destruction of Well B-1
4 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Using the appropriate PPE will minimize the potential hazards from exposure to constituents of
concern (COCs). The minimum level of protection selected for the project is Level D modified,
as defined by the USEPA (July 1988). Level D modified protective equipment is used on sites
that have been investigated and characterized as posing occupationally insignificant respiratory
hazards, but potential skin hazards, and for which all criteria for the use of air-purifying
respirators have been met. Dermal protection is required to prevent unnecessary exposure.
The protection level at the project area may be upgraded, at any time, as specified by the Site
Safety Officer or Project Manager.
All personnel who wear respiratory protective equipment must be trained in the proper use of
that equipment. Respirators must be fit-tested to specific individuals and must be approved for
protection against site-specific hazardous materials. All respiratory equipment will be clean and
in proper working condition. If air-purifying respirators are required, cartridges appropriate for
the site-specific COC's (Ex. Organic vapor,/particulate cartridges) will be utilized. Respirators
will be used when drilling concrete.
The following PPE must be worn at the site:
• Long pants;
• Sleeved shirt;
• Nitrile gloves;
• ANSI- or ASTM-approved steel-toed boots or safety shoes;
• ANSI-approved safety glasses;
• ANSI-approved hard hat;
• Hearing protection, as needed; and
• High visibility traffic safety vest.
4.1 Conditions Requiring Level C Protection
If the protection level at the project area is upgraded to Level C, as specified by the Site Safety
Officer or Project Manager, then workers in affected area(s) will upgrade PPE to Level C. In
addition to protective equipment specified for Level D, Level C also includes the following items.
• NIOSH-approved half- or full-face air-purifying respirator (APR) equipped with
particulate and organic vapor filter cartridges.
10275-4
D U D E K 17 June 2017
