S■ KLEINFELDER File No. 20-3978-01.Wr6 February 24, 1997 4 ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED As a part of the field assessment, a total of twenty-seven (27) locations were sampled. Kleinfelder obtained a total of 32 soil samples from the 27 locations. Chemical analysis was subsequently conducted on 28 of the 32 soil samples obtained. 4.1 PRE-FIELD ACTIVITIES As required by San Joaquin County Public Health Services Department Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD), Kleinfelder submitted a boring/well permit and a workplan to San Joaquin County PHS/EHD because closure will be requested for the railroad spurs. Kleinfelder prepared a health and safety plan for use in the field. For a copy of the workplan approval (approved December 9, 1996) and the boring permit (approved November 29, 1996), please refer to Appendix B. The plans for the local areas were inspected to establish the presence/absence of underground utility or process piping. 4.2 FIELD ACTIVITIES Over the course of three days (December 26-27, 1997, January 13, 1997), a total of twenty- seven (27) locations were sampled in the vicinity of the railroad spurs (refer to Plate 3). All samples were collected using a slide-hammer sampler, including eight (8) samples collected at a depth of five (5) feet. The 5 foot samples were collected via hand auger soil borings. From the 27 locations, twenty-four (24) surface soil samples were collected at approximate 300 foot intervals on alternating sides of the railbed. The deeper five foot samples were collected at eight randomly selected locations, as soil staining was not evident at any of the surface sample locations. The hand auger borings were logged and sampled according to the protocol described in Attachment A.
