I■ KLEINFELDER
File No. 20-3978-01.W10
July 26, 1997
5.2 First Ouarter 1997 Groundwater Sampling and Analysis (File No 20 3978 02 E02)
Based on the results of the assessment conducted in this area, Kleinfelder had the following
recommendations detailed in our report "First Quarter 1997 Groundwater Sampling and
Analysis, Former Spreckels Sugar Plant No. 2, 18800 South Spreckels Road, Manteca,
California, (WDR Order# 77-247)" dated May 5, 1997:
Based on the data obtained during our assessment, the following conclusions and
recommendations have been formulated:
1. During the February 20, 1997 monitoring event of the eleven monitoring wells,
groundwater was found to exist beneath the site at a depth of approximately 10 to 29
feet. A groundwater gradient and direction was calculated based on depth-to-water
data collected from these five and by data collected during a survey by RLC
Associates on in December 1996. The groundwater flow direction is estimated to be
towards the northwest at a relatively flat gradient of approximately 0.002 ft/ft. In.
areas of flat groundwater gradients such as this site, groundwater flow directions may
significantly fluctuate due to rainfall, groundwater recharge, groundwater pumping,
etc.. Therefore, changes in groundwater flow directions may vary at this site with
time.
2. The water samples obtained were analyzed for CAM 17 Metals per Title 22 of the
California Code of Regulations (22CCR). The ranges of metals detected together
with the corresponding maximum contaminant levels (MCLs), as listed in
22CCR§64431, are shown in the table below. Where no MCL is listed, a Secondary
Maximum Contaminant Level(SMCL), as listed in 22CCR§64449, is used.
CAM 17 Detected Metals SMCL (mg/L) Result Range(mg/L) MCL(mg/L)
Arsenic --- ND to 0.12 0.05
Barium --- 0.14 to 1.4 1.0
Copper 1.0 ND to 0.0098 ---
Vanadium No SMCL ND to 0.040 No MCL
Zinc5.0ND to 0.24 No MCL
The concentrations of zinc present in the groundwater do not exceed the SMCL and
do not appear to be of any concern. The concentrations of vanadium present are very
low; and there is no MCL or SMCL listed in 22CCR. Therefore, the concentrations
present are not alarming.
10-3978-01.W1012017L155 Page 34 of 50 Copyright 1997,Kleinjelder,Inc.
