KLEINFELDER
File No. 20-3978-01.W10
July 26, 1997
well). The recommended SMCL for TDS in groundwater is 500 mg/L
(22CCR§64449). All the water samples obtained with exception of the stock (cattle
pen) well exceeded that concentration. Additionally, water samples obtained from
Monitoring Wells 1 through 4, exceeded the upper SMCL of 1000 mg/L. However,
please note that the hard water exhibited by said concentrations are common to many
areas of the San Joaquin Valley.
6. Nitrate concentrations as NO, ranged from ND to 120 mg/L in the water samples
obtained. The highest concentration was in the upgradient well (MW-5).
7. In general, the groundwater samples obtained can best be characterized as a calcium-
magnesium bicarbonate water with a high mineral content, particularly near the lime
ponds. All of the water samples would make for a poor quality drinking water.
8. Other than the continued monitoring of groundwater as required by the Waste
Discharge Requirements (WDRs) for the ponds on site, Kleinfelder would
recommend no further actions as it relates to the results of this sampling.
Additionally, Kleinfelder is currently awaiting a response from the State of
California Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) regarding the April 7,
1997 Pond Closure Investigation report. In that report, Kleinfelder recommended
that the RWQCB rescind the WDRs for the site, allow the ponds to be razed, and
allow reuse of the pond sediments. Therefore, when the WDRs are rescinded, further
monitoring will likely not be needed.
9. A copy of this report should be submitted to the San Joaquin County Public Health
Services Department Environmental Health Division and the Central Valley Office
of the State of California Regional Water Quality Control Board by the Atherton-
Kirk for their review and consideration.
10-3978-01.W10 11017L155 Page 36 of 50 Copyright 1997,Kleinfelder,Inc.
