Diamond Pet Food&AltaGas Ripon Energy January 31,2017
Combined Annual and Fourth-Quarter 2016 Groundwater-Monitoring Report Page 3 of 6
INFLUENT/EFFLUENT MONITORING
DP staff performed all influent and effluent monitoring and reporting in accordance with WDR
Order No. R5-2012-0105.
Table 6 presents influent (Clarifier) analytical data for 2016.
Table 4 presents effluent (ASB-2) analytical data for 2016.
Attachment B presents influent data and Attachment C presents effluent data collected by DP
staff.
WASTE WATER TREATMENT FACILITY EVALUATION
The WWTF consists of a solids separation system, a Clarifier, ASB-I and ASB-2, and 75 acres
of percolation fields and orchards (Areas A through E). During 2016, the system was in good
repair and functioned properly.
No nuisance conditions (odors)were reported and aerobic conditions (DO levels >1.0 mg/L)
prevailed in ASB-I and ASB-2 throughout 2016 (Attachment Q.
Assuming DP and Ripon Energy produce their allowable average daily flows every month for
12 months, approximately 104,390,000 gallons of effluent would be produced, however, in
2016, only 48,775,555 gallons of water were produced(Table 3). The actual volume of water
that will be treated and disposed through the WWTF in 2017, however, will depend on the
number of days DP and the Ripon Energy operate.
PROGRESS IN IMPLEMENTING THE SALINITY AND NUTRIENT EVALUATION AND MINIMIZATION
PLAN
On behalf of DP and Ripon Energy, L&A submitted a Salinity and Nutrient Evaluation and
Minimization Plan, dated December 1, 2013, in which the sources of salinity and nutrients in
DP and Ripon Energy wastewater were identified and methods to reduce salinity and nitrogen
were evaluated. The report identified the primary source of nutrients in the combined DP and
Ripon Energy effluent as the City of Ripon's non-potable water, used by Ripon Energy as its
main water supply; TDS levels in the non-potable water also were higher than in the
groundwater used by DP as their water supply.
Because the current levels of TDS and nutrients in the DP and Ripon Energy effluent are below
the limits set forth in WDR Order No. R5-2012-0105 for salinity and nutrients (TDS and total
nitrogen), formal nutrient or salinity pollution prevention plans have not been required. DP and
Ripon Energy, however, continue to investigate options to reduce both salinity and nutrients in
their effluent.
Table 7 presents the monthly effluent-flow volumes discharged in 2016 to each individual LAA
and the corresponding pounds of TDS and nitrogen contained in the flows (Attachment J). In
2016 a total of 28,060,232 gallons of effluent were disposed in the 5 LAAs containing 125,738
pounds of TDS and 1,332 pounds of nitrogen. This represents a 54% decrease (-32,412,928
gallons) in the volume of water disposed relative to the previous year; a 54% decrease (-146,054
pounds) in the pounds of TDS disposed; and a 26% decrease (400 pounds) in the pounds of
nitrogen disposed relative to 2015.
MANN-KENDALL ANALYSIS
Mann-Kendall Trend Analysis was performed for EC, TDS, chloride, and nitrate (as nitrogen)
concentrations in compliance wells OB-2, OB-4, OB-7, OB-8, OB-11, OB-19, OB-26, and OB-
28 from April 2009 (the last full month of Neenah's paper production)to the present
010107.08 Task 4 Lawrence&Associates
W.9CLIENTSIDiamond Pet Foods1010107.01-Groundwater MonitoringlGroundwater Monitoring12016WQAnnua1201614TH QUARTER Annual 2016.doc
