Five-Year Water-Quality Report November 17,2008
Neenah Paper FR LLC Ripon Mill Page 13 of 19
Text Figure 15
Nitrate in City of Ripon Production Wells- MW-2& MW 3
70
60 --- --- ------- ---
50 ---- - - -- ---- --- ---------- --
3
40 ----- - - -- - - - -- - -- ----- -
30 -- --- -- - - - --- --------
'z
20 -----` -- - - -- - --- -- - -- - -- -
10 `.,
0 -I- —
Apr-01 Sep-02 Jan-04 May-05 Oct-06 Feb-08
Date
-411- MW-2 MW-3 - MW-4
ACTIONS TAKEN TO REDUCE DISSOLVED SOLIDS IN GROUNDWATER
The most recent action taken to reduce dissolved solids in groundwater beneath the site has been to
import high-quality(TDS < 150 mg/L)water from the SSJID for spreading in the east percolation
field. Spreading of low-TDS water was the corrective-action option chosen by NP to meet the Water
Quality Protection Standard adopted by the CVRWQCB for the site(Table 2). The SSJID water
was delivered by the City of Ripon by piping from their holding pond located on the north side of
their MWWTF ponds.
Between June 26 and August 16, 2007, and June 19 and September 8, 2008, approximately 136 and
137 acre-feet,respectively, of low (133 mg/L) TDS water was spread in NP's east percolation field
and allowed to infiltrate into the subsurface. The east percolation field was chosen as the spreading
area because it is located between a high TDS plume below ASB-2 and production wells PW-6
through PW-8. In addition to recharging the semiperched aquifer with low TDS water, the irrigation
water had the additional benefit of reversing the groundwater gradient away from the production-
well field, essentially creating a hydrologic barrier between ASB-2's TDS plume and the production
wells. Improving the quality of water in the vicinity of the production wells ultimately improves the
quality of water discharged by NP as effluent.
003044.02 Lawrence&Associates
W:•ClientslFoxRiver-Neenah15 year review reportsU Year Review 2008Weenah_5YearReview Aug2008.doc
