Five-Year Water-Quality Report November 17,2008
Neenah Paper FR LLC Ripon Mill Page 14 of 19
TABLE 2
Water Quality Protection Standards
Parameter Units Semiperched Upper Intermediate
Aquifer Aquifer Aquifer
Bicarbonate mg/L 307 482 315
Calcium mg/L 51 209 49
Chloride m 178 197 68
Electrical conductance grnhos/cm 1,242 1,580 760
Ma esium m 26 43 8.8
Nitrate m 4.3 4.7 5.7
_pH units 6.5-8.5 6.5-8.5 6.5 -8.5
Potassium m 2.6 10 6.8
Sodium mg/L 184 89 100
Sulfate mg/L 111 150 31
Total dissolved solids m 713 1,030 470
No other changes in plant process were made during the period 2002 through mid-2008. Prior to
1998, the two facilities reduced effluent TDS by reducing alum consumption through changes in
paper manufacturing chemistry, installing a brine concentrator at the cogen plan and trucking
concentrated brine offsite for reuse, and replacing production wells PW-1 through PW-3 with wells
PW-4 through PW-8 (currently only wells PW-6 through PW-8 are used)
Current plans are to operate the NP facility part time(as little as 50%of the time for the near term).
This will reduce the mass of TDS proportionally to the reduced operating schedule, because there
will be less effluent generated.
The quality of effluent(as illustrated by TDS mass in ASB-2) was stable between 2002 and 2006
(Text Figure 8,page 5). In 2007, TDS showed an increasing trend (Text Figure 9,page 5). In
2008, TDS mass dropped to pre-2006 levels, or lower.
Table 3 shows the percentage change in the concentration of several monitoring parameters between
the most recent available data(May 2008) and 2002 data. All parameters, except sulfate, show lower
concentrations in 2008 (sulfate showed no change). TDS concentration was below 1,100 mg/L (the
discharge limitation set by the WDR) for ASB-2 during the entire period of 2002 to date.
003044.02 Lawrence&Associates
W.I Clients ToxRiver-Neenah U year review reports l5 Year Review 2008Weenah_5YearReview Aug2008.doc
