Water-Quality Diagrams (Stiff Patterns)
Stiff patterns are graphic representations of water quality and are created by plotting the
concentrations of anions and cations (in meq/L) in a sample on a horizontal axis and then
connecting the dots to create a unique pattern for each well. Stiff patterns for all wells are
presented in Attachment A.
L&A's Five-Pear Water-Quality Report, dated November 17, 2008, categorized all wells by
their Stiff patterns to illustrate a progression from relatively undegraded groundwater to mill
effluent. Semiperched zone well 013-16, upper zone well TH-5, and intermediate zone well TH-
6 are the best examples of the least-degraded water-quality category. These wells are located in
the southeast corner of the site adjacent to the Stanislaus River and groundwater samples likely
are composed mainly of river water. The small size of their Stiff patterns (relative to most other
