Private wells,however,are not legally
required to meet these standards.
The secondary MCL for MtBE has been established at 5 ug/l based on the aesthetics of odor. Currently,
DHS is considering adopting a primary MCL for drinking water of 13 ug/1 based on health effects. Pending
a confirmation sampling event to verify the concentration of MtBE in your domestic drinking water well,
PHS-EHD recommends that you do not drink the water or use it in the preparation of meals.
PHS-EHD will require the owner/operator of the underground storage tanks previously located at Ranch
Market,23569 S. Santa Fe Road,to collect and analyze additional groundwater samples from your well. This
will be done to verify and monitor the presence of MtBE in your well. If MtBE continues to be present in
your well,PHS-EHD recommends that you use bottled water for drinking or cooking purposes. Long term
corrective measures would be:
1. Provide treatment such as "granular activated carbon filtration" which removes
contaminants by passing the well water through a charcoal bed.
2. Construct a replacement well. A test well would be drilled and water quality analysis
performed prior to final placement of the new well. Certain"grout" conditions apply
for this area. Please consult with a California licensed well driller for details.
If you have any questions, please contact Michael Infuma at(209) 468-3454.
Donna Heran,REHS,Director
Environme t H alth Di n
Michael J.
