The following is a summary of our field events since and our proposed tasks.
Product Thickness
We have been monitoring the free product thickness at the Ranch Market daily now since January 20, 2004. The first two
days out we did not have a oiltwater interface probe on hand, in that, it was out on another job site. We measured product
thickness by lowering a clear bailer into the well and retrieving the bailer. The product thickness was measured inside the
bailer. Some product bailing was performed (minimizing groundwater removal) to see if the product depth recovered
quickly in the wells. After two events (days) of product removal the product thickness(less than 1/2 gallon of gasoline)
was reduced from 4 inches to less than one inch thick. Field sheets are attached.
We will perform one more sounding on Wednesday (Jan. 28)and then on Friday(Jan. 30)we plan to mobilize to the site
with a submersible pump and attempt to create a cone of depression to see if we can draw the free product into the
depression and measure depth to water and product thickness throughout the duration of pumping. This will give us an
idea on the recoverability of free product from this one point(MW3). Also at that time we will remove as much product as
possible.
Groundwater Sampling
We also plan to collect a groundwater sample from MW3 below the free product to get an idea of what the saturated
dissolved contaminant concentration in groundwater is at the site.
Additional Sources:
Based on your report of neighbors claiming to additional USTs at the site, Geocon is proposing to
perform a file review. After the file review and regardless of the results, we are proposing to perform
a geophysical survey to attempt to confirm the location of USTs identified in the file review or to
potentially identify unknown USTs.
Fresh or Degraded Product?
Based on observation, the free product is a degraded fuel. Also, given that there have been no USTs serviced at the site
since 1991, 1 would not expect fresh product at the site.
Please respond with your thoughts and comments on our proposed tasks.
Thank you,
Matt Hanko
Geocon Consultants, Inc.
1
