2.3 Underground Storage Tank Removal
The site was previously operated as a convenience store and retail gasoline fueling facility
with three single walled steel gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs) as shown on Figure
3 The date of installation, operation history, and inventory records of the USTs at the Site is
unknown The three USTs two 1,000-gallon and one 5,000-gallon UST and associated
pumps were removed from the Site on May 20, 1991 The single dispenser island was located
directly over the tank pit, so no dispenser or fuel line soil samples were collected During
removal of the USTs, soil contamination was observed at the bottom of the tank excavation
and documented in five soil samples collected after removal of the tanks (Figure 3, Table 1)
2.4 Domestic Wells and Septic Fields
The Site and the following three residences use septic fields for treatment of waste water and
have domestic wells that are the sole source of water for each residence
The location of the domestic wells and septic field on each property is shown on Figure 2 and
the well completion information is summarized in Table 2 Well DW-1 is sampled monthly
and Wells DW-2R, DW-3, and DW-4 are sampled quarterly for the presence of benzene,
toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes (BTEX), total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as
gasoline (TPHg), oxygenates, 1,2-Dichloroethane (1,2-DCA), and 1,2-Dibromoethane (EDB)
using Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) method 8260B
2.4.1 Domestic Well DW-2 Shut Down and Destruction
On October 7, 1999, domestic well DW-2 was sampled and reported to contain MtBE at 38
parts-per-billion (ppb) (Table 3) Since additional water samples collected in November and
December 1999 contained MtBE, the RWQCB required well DW-2 to be removed from
service and the home supplied with an alternative potable water supply In January 2000,
DW-2 was shut down and a temporary water line was run from the Ranch Market well DW-1
