8
•
Sampling Protocol
Soil 'i
Soil samples were obtained from core samples taken every 5 feet during drilling,
utilizing a split-spoon sampler with brass sleeves The samples were contained within the
brass sleeve, covered with aluminum.foil and sealed with plastic caps The plastic cap
was taped to the brass sleeve with duct tape so that an airtight seal was obtained Samples
were marked and placed in a cooled environment during transportation to the laboratory
A Chain- Of-Custody was properly completed by the sampler and signed by the
laboratory Detection limits were supplied by the laboratory
The split-spoon sampler and the brass sleeves were decontaminated before each
sampling event They were washed with detergent and water, and then rinsed with water
and finally rinsed with distilled water
Core samples were screened with an OVA meter and the readings were recorded
on the drill logs These readings were used to help select the soil samples for laboratory
analysis
Groundwater
A 2" pump was used to purge the water from the wells A 2" PVC disposable
bailer was used to withdraw the samples after recovery of at least 80% of the pre-purged
well volume All equipment, including the bailer, and the water depth measuring device
• were decontaminated prior to entering any well They were decontaminated by washing
with detergent and water, then thoroughly rinsed with clean water, and finally rinsed with
distilled water
The depth to the ground water was measured from the highest point on the top of
the casing to the surface of the water table The devise used was an electric conductivity
device which trips a red light and buzzer when the probe touches water A mmmmum of
three measurements were made at each well, the final reading was noted after two or more
readings did not vary by more than 0 003 feet
Once the depth to water was known, the tape and probe were withdrawn from the
well and thoroughly dried A small amount of water paste was placed on the axis of the
probe and the probe was lowered to the water table Care was taken not to allow the
probe to descend into the water below the contact point Then the probe was withdrawn
rapidly and inspected for signs of free product above the contact point If free product
was noted, the sample was smelled to verify it was a petroleum hydrocarbon, then the
thickness of the free product was noted on the well log
i
