i
All soil cuttings derived from the well installation were containenzed in 55 gallon steel drums
4 with bolt-down lids. These drums were labeled and stored in a parking lot near the site until
after the soil could be analyzed Analyses indicated that the soil could be characterized as
"clean" and a total of 53 drums of soil were disposed of as clean soil in April, 1992 at the
Forward Landfill, south of Stockton Copies of soil disposal documents are presented in
Appendix B.
2.2 Groundwater Sampling
Groundwater samples were collected from each new monitoring well and analyzed for the
following compounds
' • Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX), EPA Method 602
' Total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-G), EPA Method 8015-M
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPH-D), EPA Method 8015-M
+ Ethylene dibromide (EDB), EPA Method 504
' Total lead, EPA Method 239 2
The monitoring wells from the Phase I groundwater investigation (wells MW-2 and MW-3) were
sounded to determine if sampling from these wells was possible However, each of these wells
was dry and consequently no samples were collected from them Phase I well MW-1 was
abandoned prior to construction of the new Human Services building
' 2.3 Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QA/QC)
' Field QA/QC sampling consisted of collecting two equipment decontamination samples from the
sample collection bailer. The first decontamination sample was collected after sampling MW-6
' at the end of the first field day and is labeled MW-11 The second decontamination sample was
collected after sampling MW-7 at the end of the second day and was labeled MW-12 These
samples are a check of the effectiveness of the equipment decontamination procedure and were
' analyzed only for BTEX Two trip blanks were also collected and analyzed for BTEX A trip
blank is a container of clean laboratory grade water which is placed in the sample cooler along
with the other water samples and transported to the laboratory If analysis of the trip blank
' indicates the presence of a contaminant, then the analytical results of the other samples in the
cooler may be in doubt A blind duplicate of the sample from MW-5 was collected as a check
on analytical laboratory repeatability This sample was labeled MW-10
' 2.4 Aquifer Characteristics Testing
The investigation work plan called for a pumping test of one of the new monitoring wells in
order to determine aquifer parameters for future use in possible groundwater extraction
activities. Because of the difficult logistics of performing a pumping test in a congested urban
area and the costs associated with containenzing all of the pumping test water, slug tests were
