As the title implies,
this report presented several suggestions for remedial action at the Southwest
Hide Company property near Manteca, California. Because of the cost of
investigating and implementing one or more of these actions, it was decided that
waiting for the input and requirements of the regulatory agency was the prudent
course of action.
The established ground water monitoring program was continued during this four
month holding period and several more sets of elevation data now exist for tile
Manteca Property. Any additional work however, seemed premature in light of the
value of the Regional Board' s feedback.
The two old production wells on the Southwest Hide Company property were
abandoned on September 5 and 6, 1989, as per the design submitted to the Regional
Water Quality Board. This procedure was virtually identical for both wells and
consisted of cleaning the wells by displacing sediments with viscous drilling
mud. Once clean, the holes were filled with a dense bentonite slurry which
displaced the drilling mud used in the cleaning process and acted as a permanent
seal for the hole. Prior to the bentonite setting up, a cutting tool was used
to split the old casing so that the bentonite might enter into the annular
spacing. San Joaquin County Health Inspector, Elanor Ratliff, was on site during
the final stages of abandonment for both producto'-n teTTs.
The water quality data from the new monitoring wells are included in appendix A
and were received on July 31, 1989. This date fell one day before tile
Beneficial Use and Remedial Action Report deadline and was thus omitted from that
report.
1107 KENNEDY PLACE,SUITE 7,DAVIS.CA 95616•(916)756-2250
E N G I N E E R I N G c O N S U L T A N T S 0 P R O J E C T P L A N N E R S
