MONITORING AND REPORTING PROGRAM -5-
SOUTHWEST HIDE COMPANY
SURFACE IMPOUNDMENT CLOSURE
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
INFORMATION SHEET
Southwest Hide Company operates an animal hide curing facility near the City of
Manteca. Brines are currently discharged to two evaporation ponds. These ponds
were lined with flexible membrane liners. The liners were constructed in 1979
and did not meet the strict construction standards which have been in effect
since 1984. The ponds leaked brine wastes to ground water. Highly saline solid
wastes have been buried onsite. These wastes have also leached salt to ground
water. A plume of ground water with elevated salts originates from both the
ponds and the buried wastes. Flow of the plume is influenced by nearby
production wells. Southwest Hide Company has decided to replace the pond
disposal system.
These waste discharge requirements regulate the closure of the evaporation ponds,
ground water remediation and remediation of the buried solid wastes.
Surface water drainage is to the Stanislaus River.
