T
$W INTERN,„kONAL TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION
2.1 Drilling Methodology
IT will notify Underground Services Alert (USA) at least two working days before starting
any drilling activities. This, in addition to studying utility maps will help insure that drilling
activities will not encounter any underground utilities.
Each day, prior to field work, the field geologist or IT site representative will conduct a
j tailgate safety meeting to ensure proper site safety precautions are identified and also to
conform to the IT site specific health and safety plan (Section 3.0).
i
The borings will be drilled by a sub-contractor with a current C-57 license. All drilling will
be performed with a steam cleaned, 8 O.D. inch hollow stem auger. The field geologist will
determine the depth of the borehole and any special procedures necessary to manage any
► unusual or anomalous conditions (i.e. flowing sands). Boreholes are anticipated to be
approximately 50 feet deep based on depth to groundwater information collected from wells
adjacent to the site (MW-1 through MW-3).
L
y
2.2 Soil Sampling
All subsurface materials will be described using the visual method of the Unified Soil
Classification System (USCS) as described in United States Bureau of Reclamation document
No. 5005-86. Samples will be collected utilizing a split spoon sampler advanced using a 140
lb. hammer. The sampler will contain brass tubes for collection of undisturbed samples. The
sampler and brass tubes will be decontaminated by scrubbing with a non-phosphate detergent,
triple rinsed with tap water, rinsed with methanol followed by a distilled water rinse. (Brass
tubes pre-cleaned by supplier may be used.) Soil samples will be collected every five feet.
L. Select vadose zone soil samples will be submitted for laboratory analysis in order to provide a
t
vertical hydrocarbon distribution profile. Additional samples will be collected and analyzed
from the following locations in the well bore (if applicable):
1. The interface between the unsaturated and saturated zones.
2. Areas of obvious contamination (the number of samples collected per this
condition will be at the discretion of the field geologist).
3. Areas exhibiting any other unusual conditions.
MZ/o9-29-92/ENG/9783.NM 4
f
ti
t..
