Z2 Soil Sampling
Samples were collected utilizing a split spoon sampler advanced using a hydraulic hammer
The sampler contained brass tubes for collection of undisturbed samples The sampler and
brass tubes were decontaminated by scrubbing with a non-phosphate detergent, triple rinsing
with tap water, rinsing with methanol followed by a distilled water rinse Soil samples were
collected every 6 inches withm the lower foot of each borehole, to the maximum attainable
depth All vadose zone samples collected were submitted for laboratory analysis in order to
provide a vertical hydrocarbon distnbution profile.
Each soil sample was promptly sealed with aluminum foil, plastic end caps and tape The
samples were then placed in a "ziplock" bag, sealed with security tape and delivered to a
DOHS certified laboratory for analysis. Chain-of-Custody records will be maintained for all
samples.
' 2.3 Soil Sample Analysis
All soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as diesel and benzene,
toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA methods 8015 and 8020 respectively
yThe sample containing the greatest diesel concentration and/or the deepest sample per
borehole was additionally analyzed by the Soluble Threshold Limit Concentrations (STLC)
' for TPH (EPA 8015).
One select soil sample only was analyzed by Zalco Laboratories, Inc. (under subcontract to
McCampbell) for total organic matter using method 24/USDA Handbook #60 One
representative sample was additionally tested for grain size distribution by sieve analysis, by
the Solea Testing Group of Concord, California A soil cutting composite sample was
analyzed by McCampbell Analytical for reactivity, corrosivity and ignitability (Title 22) to
facilitate waste disposal.
Upon arrival to the laboratory, the samples' condition was checked and any nonconformaties
were noted Copies of the Chain of Custody records and signed laboratory reports are
presented in Appendices A and B respectively
MZ/09-06-941UST/94-0I38 mer 5
