2.4 Well Construction
Vadose zone observation wells were planned at the site, however the desired drill depths
could not be attained, therefore, no wells were constructed
2.5 Disposal of Contaminated Materials
Drill cuttings (if any) from the boreholes, are currently stored in 55-gallon drums located at
the site Decontamination liquids were contained in 55-gallon drums, as they were produced,
and stored on-site. Stockpiled cuttings and water are currently being profiled and scheduled
for disposal at appropriate facilities
3.0 Results
3.1 Site Geology
During drilling activities conducted in the facility basement, approximately 4.5 feet of
foundation fill material was encountered, which consisted of gravels and assorted debris
(rebar, bricks, etc ) with intermittent concrete layers Native soils were encountered at
approximately 4.5 feet below the basement floor.
A particle size analysis, using the hydrometer method, was conducted on a native soil sample
collected from borehole VW-1. Results indicated the sample was composed of 26% fines and
74% coarse grained material, which can be described as brown silty sand with gravel using
the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS)
Identification of soil stratigraphy underlying the abandoned tanks was not possible due to
auger refusal, however, review of boring logs for wells located surrounding the site indicates
that the site is underlain by unconsolidated fluvial sediments consisting of layers of lean clay
and sand with varying amounts and sand and fines respectively (Figures 4 and 5). Copies of
the IT Corporation boring logs for wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-3 are included as Appendix
C of this report.
3.2 Site Hydrogeology
No groundwater was encountered during this investigation, however, groundwater is known to
exist at the site at a depth of approximately 41 feet below grade Groundwater flow vanes
from east to northeast under a shallow gradient.
MZ/09-06-94/UST/940138 mer 6
