(AGE) and has the following
comments.
The report documents a routine quarterly groundwater monitoring and sampling event
that took place on January 13, 2003, and a routine operation and maintenance and air
sampling of the onsite soil vapor extraction/air sparging (SVE/AS) remediation system
that took place on October 28, 2002.
Analytical results from the groundwater samples indicate that the contaminant
concentrations are decreasing in the most heavily impacted wells, MW-2 and MW-4, and
are staying fairly constant in the less heavily impacted peripheral wells.
The influent vapor sample collected prior to remediation in the SVE system was reported
to contain 1,600 micrograms per liter total petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHg).
The estimated recovery of contamination from this system was reported to be averaging
50.9 gallons TPHg per month. The report states that the SVE/AS system was de-
activated on October 28, 2002.
The report recommends replacement of the SVE carbon canisters and continued
operation of the SVE/AS system. SJC/EHD agrees with this recommendation. It is
apparent from the analytical data that the SVE/AS system has been and continues to be
doing an effective job recovering petroleum hydrocarbons from the subsurface.
Operation of this system must continue until it has reached an ineffective asymptotic
state in its ability to recover contaminants. Please resume operation of the SVE/AS
system immediately.
Routine quarterly groundwater monitoring and sampling must continue at this site until
directed otherwise by this agency, and must include all wells. Analysis for TPH as diesel
should be performed on the water samples collected from MW-2, MW-4 and MW-7 at
