Uil
31 May 2002
AGE-NC Project No 01-0827
2 2 SOIL-VAPOR EXTRACTION (SVE) MONITORING PROCEDURES
On 10 December 2001, a pre-existing SVE well network was start-up tested, the SVE/IAS system
was inspected or maintained weekly and monitored monthly during operation The SVE's carbon
media was changed on a regular basis between 10 December 2001 and 15 April 2002, to allow for
hydrocarbon destruction/adsorption
IDuring each SVE/IAS monitoring event, measurement of the SVE flow rate, vacuum (potential),
concentrations of hydrocarbons in the extracted soil-vapor and collection of a set of soil-vapor
' samples were conducted by AGE personnel The flow rate of extracted soil-vapor (influent) was
measured using a direct measure flow meter A magnehelic vacuum gauge was used to measure the
vacuum(potential) at the vapor extraction wells The organic vapor concentrations in the extracted
soil-vapor stream was measured before entering the blower (influent stream) and after exiting the
carbon units(effluent stream)using an organic vapor meter(OVM)equipped with a photo-ionization
detector(PID Thermo Environmental 580A, 10 OeV, calibrated to isobutylene 100 ppb)
. 23 SOIL-VAPOR SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS
Soil-vapor samples were collected to document trends in concentrations of hydrocarbon vapor in the
' soil-vapor extracted by the SVE network and to determine the treatment system hydrocarbon
destruction rate Soil-vapor samples from the influent and effluent streams were collected in Tedlar
vaporbags on 10 December2001, 18 December 2001,29 January 2002, 11 February 2002, 11 March
' 2002 and 15 April 2002 The samples were labeled, placed in a pre-chilled cooler and transported
under chain-of-custody to either McCampbell Analytical, Inc (MAI) or Cal Tech Environmental
Laboratories (CTEL), both laboratories are State of California Department of Health Services
' (DHS)-certified analytical laboratories The samples were analyzed for
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) in accordance with EPA
' Method 8015 Modified and
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes (BTEX) and methyl tertiary-butyl ether
' (MTBE) in accordance with EPA Method 8020 or 8021
' 24 WELL MONITORING AND EVACUATION
On 25 February 2002, a Solinst water level meter was used to measure the depth to ground water in
' ground water monitoring wells MW-2 and MW-4 through MW-8 After recording water level
• measurements, a dedicated disposable bailer was used to purge each monitoring well of standing
' water Approximately 5 to 6 5 gallons of water(a minimum of 3 casing-well water volumes) were
Advanced GeoEnvcranMental,Inc
1
