This represents an exceptional value due to the
proportionately (direct linear relationship) greater surface area of Westates virgin
carbon versus typical virgin products offered through other suppliers This translates
into greater capacity per pound of carbon thus increasing service life and decreasing
changeouts under equivalent operating conditions of contaminants, concentrations,
flow, etc.
Example: Using the above quoted figure for reactivated non-hazardous service, $11100
iodine number = $ x 800 iodine = $ equivalent pnce_
Thus the quoted $11000 lbs 1100 iodine carbon service would be comparable to $/1000
lbs, of 800 iodine carbon service.
TECHNICAL DISCUSSION
(By Dr. James R. Graham, Technical Director, US Filter/Westates Carbon)
Iodine Number and Carbon Performance - The iodine number of a carbon is a measure
of the internal surface area of that carbon. A higher iodine number means the activated
carbon has a higher surface area and therefore has more sites available for adsorption
to occur A carbon that has an iodine number of 900 mgl2/g would have a surface area
of about 9590 - 1000 m2/g. A 1000 iodine number would translate into a surface area of
1050 - 1100 m219.
