3.2 Respiratory/Eye/Ear Protection
a. During drilling activities, ambient air and soil vapor,if it exists, will be monitored with an OVA.
b. Site perimeter will also be monitored and monitoring frequency will be increased by the site
manager if conditions approach 10 ppm with the OVA.
C. Safety glasses/goggles will be worn during all drilling activities.
d. Half face/full face respirators will be worn when airborne particulates are present and as warranted
in Section 5.
C. Appropriate hearing protection will be used during all drilling activities.
4.0-PHYSICAL HAZARDS
Safety hazards will be typical of those associated with construction activities involving heavy equipment
(e.g.,drill rig). Possible hazards include drilling, heat stress, and noise.
i
4.1 Drilling
Vironex will be responsible for performing the drilling and adhering to standard safety procedures.
The exclusion zone for the drill nig work area will be a 20-foot radius around the rig. Only
authorized personnel will be permitted within the exclusion zone. No smoking will be permitted
within the exclusion zone.
4.2 Noise ,
Noise may be a hazard in the vicinity of the drill rig. Hearing_protection will be worn when
working near heavy equipment or loud mechanical equipment.
4.3 Heat Stress
GHeat stress will be a hazard during hot weather and will be intensified when workers-are in
protective clothing. Workers will be required to take breaks, as needed, to prevent heat stress and
{ to consume adequate quantities of liquid.
5.0-AMBIENT AIR MONITORINGIRESPIRATOR RE UMEMENTS
j
Benzene, a constituent of gasoline, will be used as an indicator parameter for ambient air monitoring. Because
benzene is a suspected carcinogen and, therefore, strickly regulated, it will be useful as a conservative indicator
parameter. The following discussion assumes that exposure to benzene is a possibility; thus, a safety measure for
+ other potential air-borne contaminants is achieved.
a. Breathing zone vapor at detectable concentrations at the drilling area, as detected by an OVA,
requires site personnel to use a respirator with organic vapor cartridges and goggles while working
in the exclusion zone. As a reference, the OSHA-PEL for benzene is 1.0 ppm (see Table 5-1
below).
1 b. Breathing zone vapor at detectable concentrations requires site manager to monitor the site
perimeter(concentrating in the down wind direction).
C. Breathing zone vapor concentrations that reach or exceed 10 ppm at the drilling area, as detected
by the OVA, requires site personnel to use.a full face respirator with organic vapor cartridges
while working in the exclusion zone.
