I I
■flier I NDR.C.
Mr. John Russell
May 7, 1998
• Two separate rooms have been used for battery storage and maintenance at the CSMS.
One has been converted into an office space and the other is currently operational as a
battery room.
Operations and Maintenance Shop (OMS)
Following a review of the files at the SJPHS, CVRWQCB, RESD, and CANG, Versar
representative Mr. Philip Cox visited the OMS on April 14, 1998 and met with Sergeant Mike
Lincoln at the OMS. As a result of the file review and site visit, Versar has identified the
following items of concern(shown on Figure 3) at the OMS:
• A vehicle inspection rack is located south of the OMS. The vehicle inspection rack is
located on a concrete pad; however, there is no waste collection system located beneath
the rack and there are exposed soils surrounding the concrete pad.
• A sump is located near the southeast corner of the OMS and is connected to a clarifier
located south of the OMS. The clarifier discharge point is currently unknown. The
clarifier contents are regularly removed and disposed of by a licensed contractor. Two
additional drains are also present inside the OMS and were previously connected to the
clarifier.
• A battery room is located at the OMS and significant staining was observed on the floor
of the room.
• A 10,000-gallon diesel UST and 5,000-gallon gasoline UST were removed from the
OMS in April 1996. Analytical results indicated that soil samples collected from the
excavation were impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons. The results were submitted to
the SJPHS. The SJPHS responded in a letter dated June 25, 1996. The letter stated that
the former USTs could not be recommended for final closure without further
investigation to determine the full extent of the soil and/or groundwater problem. No
fizrther investigation is known to have occurred.
I
E 1202-9813134-100IMay7'98
