The purpose of this work is to properly characterize the lateral
and vertical extent of soils contamination associated with the former tanks and product lines. A
copy of our January 29, 1991 Soils Sampling and Testing report, containing the locations and
laboratory results of samples obtained during removal of the tanks, is attached.
Proposed Scope of Work
Based on the test results and our field observations, we recommend the drilling and sampling of
six to eight soil borings to a maximum depth of thirty feet, or to the first encounter of ground
water, whichever comes first. The borings will be advanced using a rotary drill rig with hollow-
stem augers at the proposed locations indicated on Plate 1. Soil samples will be obtained at
maximum intervals of five feet and at changes in lithology, using a Modified California Sampler
containing two-inch diameter brass tubes, cleaned with trisodium phosphate. Samples will be
screened in the field with an organic vapor analyzer (OVA). Sample tubes will be sealed with
aluminum foil, plastic caps and wrapped with tape. Selected samples will be preserved on ice and
submitted under chain-of-custody to a California-certified analytical laboratory for analysis of total
petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), benzene, toluene, xylene and ethyl benzene (BTX&E).
Samples will be selected for laboratory analysis based on conditions encountered during drilling and
field screening with the OVA. Contaminated soil generated during drilling will be stockpiled with
3060 INDUSTRIAL BOULEVARD • PO BOX 1137 • WEST SACRAMENTO,CA 95691 • (916)372-1434 • FAX(916)372-2565
