MANAGING HAZARDOUS WASTE
SPILL CLEANUP
Store associates may not clean up a spill of hazardous material without management supervision.
If there is a small spill of a hazardous material, use the steps below to clean it up. Call the Waste
Management Hot-line at 1-866-819-1926 if the spill is larger than you typically handle, or if you need
assistance.
NOTE: DO NOT vacuum hazardous spills of any kind, wet or dry!
1. Secure the area to prevent customer or associate access.
2. Identify the spilled material.
3. Determine if the spilled material is hazardous. If you are unsure, call the Waste Management
Hot-line at 1-866-819-1926 for assistance. If the material may be hazardous, put on
gloves and goggles.
4. If you are certain the spilled material is non-hazardous, no special clean-up procedures are
required. For example, a mop and bucket are acceptable.
5. If a spilled liquid material may be hazardous, absorb the spilled material with Spill Magic. The spill
procedure for hazardous liquids is outlined below.
6. If a spilled powder may be hazardous, control dust by using damp paper towels to collect the
spilled powder.
7. Ensure all spilled, clean-up and contaminated materials are collected and bagged in a gallon size,
zip-Ioc style sealing storage bag.
8. Ensure there are no free liquids in the gallon size, zip-Ioc style sealing storage bag. Add Spill Magic
to the gallon size, zip-Ioc style sealing storage bag, as necessary.
9. Seal the bag completely.
10. Place the sealed bag into a second gallon size, zip-Ioc style sealing storage bag.
11. Seal the second bag completely.
12. Using a permanent marker, write the name of the product, SKU and your initials on the bag.
13. Place the double-bagged hazardous waste item in the haz-mat tote labeled with the appropriate
category of waste.
14. Log SKU and Product information onto your Non-Saleable Hazardous Material Checklist.
BIG LOTS.► Hazardous Waste Management Program
Revised 3/21/16
