BACKGROUND, CON'T
Since 1984, Georgia-Pacific emptied the pond, excavated soil and treated about 194 million gallons of
groundwater. These activities removed about 139 pounds of chloroform.
SOIL AND GROUNDWATER CONDITIONS
After the pond was drained in 1984, testing showed the soil contained up to 200 parts per million (ppm) of
chloroform. After Georgia-Pacific excavated 1,500 cubic yards of soil from the pond, the remaining soil
only contained 3.4 ppm or less of chloroform.
Sampling of monitoring wells shows that the amount of chloroform in the groundwater is diminishing with
time. Monitoring well (BC-10) contained up to 970 parts per billion (ppb) of chloroform in 1985, 41 ppb in
2004, and 10 ppb in 2009. Similar trends are seen in the other site monitoring wells.
Chloroform in the groundwater is also diminishing with distance from the former pond. The latest sampling
showed the highest level of chloroform remaining in site groundwater is 22 parts per billion (ppb) near the
source area, and declines to 2.6 ppb about 1,400 feet from the source.
The current standard for chloroform in drinking water as set by the California Department of Public Health
is 80 ppb. All monitoring wells meet this standard. The cleanup goal of 5 ppb is projected to be met in
2016 in all wells.
RISK TO HUMAN HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Groundwater, about 40 feet deep, has levels of chloroform that are below drinking water standards.
Notice to the Hearing Impaired
TDD users can obtain information about the Site by using the California State Relay Service (800) 735-
2929 to reach the Public Participation Specialist. Ask them to contact the Central Valley Water Board at
(916) 464-3291 regarding the proposed closure of the Former Georgia-Pacific Chemical Packaging Plant,
Tracy.
FOR MORE INFORMATION
Please contact Gerald Djuth with the Central Valley Water Board to submit any comments or if you have
any questions regarding the proposed project or any of the information presented in this fact sheet.
Mr. Gerald Djuth, Engineering Geologist
California Regional Water Quality Control Board, Central Valley Region
11020 Sun Center Drive, Suite 200
Rancho Cordova, CA 95670
Phone: (916)464-4677
Email: GDjuth@waterboards.ca.aov
If you would like to learn more about the Water Board, please visit our website at www.waterboards.ca.gov.
